Reaping Day Morning

The conversation turns to the unfairness of the tesserae system, which forces the poor to increase their names in the reaping for food. Gale's anger at the Capitol is palpable, but Katniss tries to stay pragmatic. The Reaping Ceremony Katniss returns home, dresses in her mother's blue dress, and prepares for the ceremony. The square is filled with grim residents. The mayor reads the history of Panem and the Hunger Games. Effie Trinket, the escort, draws the girl's name. Katniss gets a bow and arrows from the dead Glimmer. They plan to destroy the Careers' food supply. Rue's knowledge of the woods and Katniss's hunting skills make them a strong team. Their bond grows as they share stories and sing.

The Rule Change and the Romance

The Rule Change Rue's Death Katniss and Rue's plan succeeds: they blow up the Careers' supplies. But Rue is caught in a net and speared by the boy from District 1. Katniss kills him, but Rue dies in her arms. Katniss sings to her and covers her body with flowers, a defiant act of humanity. The people of District 11 send her a loaf of bread as thanks. This moment solidifies Katniss's hatred of the Capitol and her determination to win. She fights Clove and barely escapes, but Thresh spares her because of Rue. She gets the medicine and saves Peeta. They return to the cave, and their relationship deepens through shared vulnerability and care.

The Final Confrontation

The Final Battle The Mutts With only four tributes left, the Gamemakers drain the water sources, forcing them to the lake. Cato attacks, but he is wearing body armor. Then the mutts arrive – genetically modified wolves that have the eyes of the dead tributes. They are terrifying. Katniss, Peeta, and Cato climb the Cornucopia to escape. The mutts attack Cato, and he suffers a long, agonizing death. Katniss finally shoots him out of mercy. The Rule Revocation After Cato dies, Claudius Templesmith announces that the rule allowing two winners has been revoked. Only one can survive. Peeta and Katniss are forced to face each other. Peeta throws his knife away and begs Katniss to kill him. She refuses. They decide to eat the nightlock berries together, a double suicide that would leave the Games without a victor. The Berries and Victory Just as they are about to eat the berries, the announcer stops them. They are both declared victors. The Capitol was forced to accept their defiance. Katniss realizes that her act of rebellion has put her in danger, but for now, she and Peeta are alive. They are taken to the hovercraft, and Peeta is treated for his wounds.
